Usability Testing

Anyone besides the office crank can do usability testing. Below is a test session. The session covers the main sections of what you should be testing and the ideas have been taken from popular usability books.

Introduction

[Done by the tester] Introduction, explain why we're doing this, explain that we are testing the product not you, Ask them to think out loud (do a quick example). Any questions? just ask us. Quick questions: what's your occupation, How many hours a week do you spend on the internet including email, favourite website?

Beginning the test

Look at this page. What you think it is, what strikes you about it, What you would click on first?

Questions for every page

  1. Do you know where to begin?
  2. What appear as the most prominent/important things?
  3. Have things that are related to each other been designed so you can easily see they related? (grouped and nested together)
  4. Is it obvious what is clickable?
  5. Do you think the icons, symbols, and descriptive words used are correct? Did any take you a long time to work out?
  6. Is the page name OK?
  7. Are there any bits of the design that you think are unnecessary and get in the way?
  8. Do any input fields and forms make sense?
  9. Are their any choices that you think are pointless?
  10. Do you think any words or descriptions are pointless or too long?

Anything not covered

These [insert element] – what did you make of them?

To move on from a page

So if you were going to [insert task] what would you do first? Why don't you go ahead and do it.

Questions for the product as a whole

  1. Is their a common consistency between pages/sections? Where their isn't do you think it is ok?
  2. Is the navigation easy to use? Positioned in the right place? Do you always know where you are? Are there any pages/sections where you think the navigation shouldn't be their.

Trunk Test

This is a different test that is good for testing on paper. It can also be used on other sites to find out what works and what doesn't.

Perform the test by printing out any page and get a tester to circle parts of the page that answer the questions as instantly as possible.

  1. What site is this? (Most likely looking to highlight a companby name or Logo)
  2. What page am i on?
  3. What are the major sections of the site?
  4. What are my options at this level?
  5. Where am I in the scheme of things?
  6. How can I search?
