Uploading Video

What is the task

Sometimes the schools/facilitators/users have produced video which they want to have compressed and put onto a JellyOS site. The process isn't particually complicated, but it's fiddly and time-consuming and very dull. Here's some instuctions about exactly what should be done

Step One: Is the video on a protected DVD?

Amazingly, some of the DVD's I've been handed to upload the video to the web have had DRM protection. That makes things akward, but [Mac The Ripper (http://downloads.theregister.co.uk/Mac/Audio/mactheripper.html)] will take the .VOB files from the DVD and put them on your hard-disk while removing the DRM protection so you can work with the files properly.

Obviously, if you've just been given some .dv or .mov files, you won't have to do this step.

Step Two: Convering to .mov

The VOB files are no help for importing into Flash unforunately. First they'll need to be converted into .mov files. You can do this with a program called [ffmpegX (http://homepage.mac.com/major4/)]. It won't work with protected .VOB files, but we've aready removed any protection in step one, so that's lucky

Obviously, if you've just been given some .dv or .mov files, you won't have to do this step.

Step Three: Video Editing

Usally there'll be akward things like .VOB's finishing half-way though a clip, or a clip starting half way through a .VOB and you'll need to ensure that every clip starts at the start and ends at the end. iMovie will let you import all the .VOB's and then export (or "share" for some insane reason) the clips back out to mp4 files (which should be renamed to .mpg or .mov afterwards). You'll want to export in the best quality settings available, we'll do the compression proper in the next bit. You will also, however, have to export a .wav file with just the audio from the track too. This is becasue flash is stupid and can't import audio from a video file.

You may be able to just export from quicktime (again, the .mov and the .wav) if your have been supplied with .mov files rather than DVDs

Step Four: Importing Into Flash

For some reason Flash won't import audio from a video file. So when you have a project open you can "import to library" or "import to stage" the movie .mov or .mpg file. Since importing audio from a quicktime file does't work, you might as well say "none" to the audio and then "Import to Library" the soundtrack you saved at step 3 too.

You'll need to make sure the sound is playing (properties in the first frame of the clip) and that the video is working and then export the movie as a .swf file

Step Five: Uploading to Gemini+

Log into JellyOS and select "Create/UploadFile" to create a Jelly Object with a file. The file you want is the .swf, obviously. Now you have a jelly object which is the movie compressed as much as it'll go. This is what I *think* I've been asked to do when I've been asked to upload video. Watch this page for when they tell me they want yet more :)
